Slip and Fall at Restaurant Results in $400,000 Settlement
Going out for a burger shouldn’t result in a serious injury, but it did for one South Carolina man. He slipped and fell on an exposed pipe, causing him to seriously injure his neck in the process.
On February 16, 2024, the man was attempting to enter the front door of a Burger King restaurant located in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. As the man stepped up onto the curb, his foot was caught in an exposed irrigation pipe. He hit his head on the side of the building and fell. As a result, the man suffered a cervical fracture and became unconscious.
The man sued Burger King and received a $400,000 settlement. The extent of the man’s injuries and his current condition are unknown.
What is a Cervical Fracture?
A cervical fracture is more commonly known as a broken neck. There are seven bones in the cervical vertebrae and any one of them can get broken due to trauma. Falls are common causes.
The spinal cord runs through these neck bones, so a broken bone can have serious consequences. Damage to the spinal cord can lead to temporary or permanent paralysis or even death.
Symptoms of a broken neck can include extreme pain, swelling, and a loss of feeling in your arms and legs. In some cases, a cervical fracture can cause shock or obstruct your airway. Because of the seriousness of this injury, a person should seek medical treatment immediately.
Diagnosis can be done through radiographs, a CT scan, and/or an MRI. These methods can confirm the diagnosis of a cervical fracture as well as the location of the broken bone. Depending on the extent of the injury, surgery may be required.
