Family Files Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Following Surgical Complications

A Charleston, South Carolina hospital and one of its doctors is facing a medical malpractice lawsuit after a woman tragically died from complications from  catheterization surgery.

The woman’s children, on behalf of their mother’s estate, claim that the hospital’s medical malpractice and negligence led to her death and that the doctors involved failed to appropriately follow up on the woman, despite her deteriorating condition.

In the fall of 2022, the woman underwent testing that revealed she had an abdominal aortic aneurysm. A catheterization was planned for Valentine’s Day 2023. During surgery, the surgeon performing the procedure opted for a coil embolization during the surgery. This decision, according to the lawsuit, compromised blood flow to the woman’s gastrointestinal organs.

Following her discharge from the hospital, the woman returned home and  her health started to decline. She experienced sharp pains, fatigue, and acid reflux, leading to bowel issues.

Despite alerting her doctor to her pain and suffering, no immediate action was taken by her healthcare providers.  After multiple visits to the emergency room, she was ultimately informed that   issues from the initial surgery had cut off blood supply to her stomach and gallbladder. Her gallbladder was removed, and she subsequently sought additional care and treatment at the Charleston hospital.  Additionally procedures were performed in an effort to increase blood flow to to her abdomen; however, she was ultimately to discharged to hospice care and passed away at home in June 2023.
