Elementary School Teacher Arrested for Sexual Exploitation of Minor

LegalPI

We expect educators to follow the law and protect children. After all, they interact with kids all day long. Sadly, some teachers exploit children, causing abuse and significant emotional harm.

A Myrtle Beach man who worked for a local school district in South Carolina is facing multiple criminal charges in a child sexual abuse investigation. The 47-year-old man, who was a music teacher at an elementary school, was caught possessing files of child sexual abuse material. He was arrested by the Horry County Sheriff’s Office for five counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.  Like all individuals accused of a crime, he is presumed innocent.

One parent, whose daughter attended the same elementary school, learned about the incident from someone else and was shocked at the arrest. However, the parent reported that she had actually noticed some red flags concerning the teacher, reporting that her daughter would come home upset, claiming that the teacher said hateful things to her and her classmates. The mother also noticed that her daughter had started to wear baggier clothes so as not to draw the attention of the teacher.

The school district learned of the criminal investigation into the teacher the night before his arrest and the teacher was immediately placed on administrative leave.

The investigation was carried out with assistance from the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, the Horry County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Secret Service and members of South Carolina’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
