Distracted Driving Alleged to Be Cause of Woman Being Run Over on South Carolina Beach

WrongfulDeath4

Imagine going to a beach to relax, only to get run over and killed. Unfortunately, a South Carolina family is dealing with this tragedy after a Myrtle Beach woman was hit by a police department vehicle on June 13.

Her family has filed a wrongful death suit against the police department, claiming  her death was the result of negligence and lax supervision, and that the law enforcement vehicle.

had run over beach chairs and other personal belongings on the beach before fatally hitting the woman.

On the afternoon that the woman was hit and killed, weather conditions were clear. Reports indicate that the driver of the police vehicle was not responding to an emergency and that his vision was not obstructed.  The lawsuit alleges the driver was distracted by something when he hit the woman.  Tragically, the woman died from her injuries approximately two hours later.

As part of their efforts to ensure other families never have to confront such tragedy,  the victim’s family is seeking to pass legislation called “Safe Sands for Sandy,” which would ban full-sized emergency vehicles on beaches.

State Rep. William Bailey, R-Little River, has announced plans to introduce legislation that would prohibit full-sized vehicles on the beach during summer hours when there are no emergency situations.
