Candy Recalled Due to Salmonella Scare

FoodPoison

We all love candy and sweets, but not when they’re contaminated with bacteria or cause food poisoning.

Recently, more than two dozen candy lines have been recalled due to salmonella concerns. Caramel pretzels, cookies, and other sweets have been recalled by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to the possibility of illnesses such as food poisoning. The products had been shipped across the country to stores such as Walmart, Target, Dollar Central, and Hy-Vee. They have also been sent to wholesalers and smaller distributors in various states such as South Carolina, California, Florida, Texas, Illinois, Alabama, Virginia, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Oregon, Iowa, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Wyoming.

The issue was raised in May when products such as “To Go Cookies & Cream Mix” and “Whipped Cream Cheese Spread” were recalled. They had been sold at Hy-Vee and were made by a third party manufacturer. The recall was recently upgraded to a Class I health risk, which is the most serious level of risk. A Class I recall means that the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death. Fortunately, there have been no reports to date of anyone becoming ill from the contaminated products.

Hy-Vee claimed that its involvement was due to a recall of products made by Palmer Candy Company as a result of salmonella contamination. The FDA had published a recall notice relating to the Palmer Candy Company on May 6, with products added to the alert on May 18.

The list of products affected by the Palmer Candy Company recall is large, with more than 30 items sold by several retailers across the country. The products come in retail packaging such as bags, pouches, and tubs. They were sold under brand names that include Palmer, Freshness Guaranteed, Sconza Chocolates, Favorite Day Bakery, Sweet Smiles, Snackin’ With The Crew, Casey’s, Sunny Select, Urge!, and Kwik Trip Inc.

Production of the product has been suspended while Palmer and the FDA continue to investigate the source of the problem. Those who have purchased white coated confectionery items manufactured by Palmer Candy Company are urged to return them to the store for a full refund.
