A shocking report was released exposing two decades of sexual misconduct, sex abuse and cover-up within the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) churches. The May 22nd report, released by independent investigator Guidepost Solutions, reflects that over the course of 20 years, reports of sex abuse and cries for help were ignored by the Southern Baptist Convention, allowing abusers – including ministers – to continue to hold positions of power in SBC churches.

Instead of treating sexual abuse survivors with the compassion and respect they deserved, the report finds that the Southern Baptist Convention refused to investigate reports of abuse and took no steps to prevent ministers accused of sexual abuse from holding positions of power in the church community. The report details a pattern of cover-up and even intimidation tactics against the victims and their families. Only when news articles were published in 2019 – exposing the fact that hundreds of SBC church representatives nationwide had been criminally charged with sex crimes and reported acts of sexual misconduct included molestation, pornography, and rape – did the SBC finally agree to an outside investigation.

To date, the Southern Baptist Convention has identified the names of 703 abusers. Of these alleged abusers, 409 were probably affiliated with the SBC. According to news reports, at least 28 South Carolina pastors, church workers, and other individuals associated with the SBC have been implicated in this sexual misconduct and abuse.
