Care Centers Sued for Wrongful Death

WD_

Sadly, abuse and neglect are common occurrences at nursing homes and assisted living facilities across South Carolina. When caring for vulnerable adults, any type of negligent behavior can have huge – and sometimes tragic – consequences.

A Georgetown County assisted living facility and rehab center are facing a wrongful death lawsuit after a woman claims their neglect caused her mother to suffer fatal injuries.

The daughter is suing the facilities for negligence, medical malpractice, and wrongful death.

The woman’s mother was admitted to the assisted living facility  after she developed dementia and Alzheimer’s disease that progressed and caused her to experience unsteadiness and falls. Upon admission, the facility was informed of the woman’s need for assistance and her balance issues. The family received a “Declaration of Resident’s Rights” document, which assured them that the woman was entitled to receive appropriate care and services “free of mental and physical abuse, neglect, and exploitation.”

However, the woman started to experience falls and the staff did not make any changes. As a result, the woman experienced repeated falls and worsened injuries over time.  A hospital visit revealed that she had suffered injuries to her head and arm; however, no changes were made to her care plan and the falls continued, with the resident complaining of pain.  Several months later, she was found unresponsive on the floor and was ultimately diagnosed

with a brain hemorrhage and an impacted fracture in her pelvis. She had surgery to treat her pelvis injury and was admitted to a rehab center; however, the falls continued and she ultimately died of her injuries several weeks later..
