1 Killed, 3 Injured in Crash

CarWreck

Driving on the roadway can always be a stressful experience because you never know what’s going to happen. Intersections can be especially tricky because cars may be coming in several directions.

A recent intersection crash in South Carolina has killed one person and injured three others. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of May 25 in Pelion, not far outside Columbia.

The crash happened at U.S. 178 at D.E. Clark Road, about two miles outside Pelion. Two pickup trucks collided at the intersection for unknown reasons.

One passenger died at the accident scene, while the drivers and another passenger were injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.   The accident is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Causes of Intersection Accidents

Intersection accidents are common due to the complexity and potentially high volume of traffic. Some factors that contribute to these types of accidents include the following:

  • Failure to yield. Many accidents occur when drivers fail to yield the right of way at intersections, often leading to side-impact or T-bone collisions.
  • Running red lights. Ignoring traffic signals and running red lights is a major cause of intersection accidents. This often results in severe crashes due to the high speeds involved.
  • Distracted driving. Drivers who are distracted by phones, passengers, or other activities may not notice traffic signals, leading to crashes.
  • Excessive speed reduces the time a driver has to react to traffic signals, other vehicles, or pedestrians, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
  • Impaired driving. Alcohol or drug impairment slows reaction times and impairs judgment, leading to a higher risk of accidents at intersections.
  • Poor weather conditions. Rain, snow, fog, and ice can reduce visibility and road traction, making it harder for drivers to navigate intersections safely.
  • Intersections with multiple lanes, turn lanes, and complex signal patterns can be confusing.
  • Improper turns. Making illegal or unsafe turns, such as turning from the wrong lane or failing to signal, can cause accidents.
  • Pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrians and cyclists who do not follow traffic signals or crosswalk rules can contribute to intersection accidents.
  • Mechanical failures. Brake failures, tire blowouts, and other mechanical issues can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles at intersections.
