Man Killed in Head-on Crash
When driving, we all know it’s important to stay in your lane. If you veer out of your lane, even for a few seconds, you could hit a vehicle head-on, causing yourself or others to be seriously injured or killed.
Sadly, this recently happened to a man in Oconee County, South Carolina. The man was killed after his Hyundai sedan crossed into the adjacent lane and collided with another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.
The crash occurred at West Oak Highway and Oak Creek Road in Westminster. A Ford pickup truck was headed west on SC 24 when the Hyundai vehicle headed east crossed the center line for unknown reasons, causing a head-on collision.
Miraculously, the driver of the pickup truck was not injured in the crash. However, the driver of the Hyundai, a 23-year-old man from Seneca, died at the accident scene. The crash is under investigation.
Why Do Drivers Veer Out of Their Lanes?
The lines in the road are meant to divide lanes. Drivers are supposed to stay between the lines, like coloring. Go outside of the lines, or lanes, and there could be serious trouble.
So why do drivers veer out of their lanes? Is it that hard to keep your car straight and steady? Possibly. There are a lot of reasons why a driver may go outside of their lane. Here are some common ones:
- Distracted driving. If a person is distracted, they are not paying attention to the road. They may be eating, using their smartphone, dealing with pets or children, using the navigation system, changing the radio station, or reading directions. These situations can all cause a person to take their eyes off the road or their hands off the wheel, causing the vehicle to drift and even crash.
- Impaired driving. Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs can reduce judgment, reaction times, and coordination. This means a driver may drift out of their lane and not even be aware of it. Sadly, each year many lives are lost due to drunk and drugged driving.
- Drowsy driving. Being a little tired while behind the wheel may not seem like a big deal, but the truth is that driving while fatigued is almost as bad as driving drunk. If a person is constantly yawning or rubbing their eyes, it is likely that they too tired to drive.
