1 Killed in Accident Involving Tractor

Every year, road work and construction are increasing across South Carolina.  As a result, motorists need to be alert and act accordingly. Drivers may need to slow down and even stop in construction zones. In some cases, they may come upon tractors in the roadway and need to proceed with care.

Recently, an accident occurred in the Columbia area when a sedan collided with a John Deer tractor, leading to one fatality. The driver then fled the scene, resulting in a hit and run accident.

The tractor was working to remove a tree from the roadway near the intersection of Air Base Road and Lower Richland Boulevard. The sedan hit the tractor, and the driver fled the scene of the accident, tragically leaving a dead passenger.  The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) is investigating the accident.

Dealing With Tractors on the Roadway

Dealing with tractors on the roadway can be challenging due to their size and slower speed. Here are some tips for safely sharing the road with tractors:

  • Be patient. Tractors typically move slower than regular traffic. Avoid honking or pressuring the driver to move faster. Show respect and patience towards other road users, regardless of their vehicle type.
  • Stay alert. Both motorists and tractor drivers should remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times.
  • Keep a safe distance. Maintain a safe following distance. Tractors can stop or turn unexpectedly.
  • Respect speed limits. Adhere to speed limits and adjust your speed according to the road and traffic conditions.
  • Watch for signals. Tractor drivers may use hand signals or the vehicle’s signals to indicate turns. Be attentive to these signals.
  • Pass safely. Ensure you have good visibility before overtaking a tractor. Tractors are wide, so make sure the road ahead is clear. Only overtake when it’s safe. Tractors might swing wide to make a turn, so be cautious.
